Bacopa Monnieri in NervoMax: What the 20% Means and What Trials Found
Bacopa monnieri is third in the NervoMax blend, listed as a 20% standardized extract with no amount printed. Trials used 300-450 mg a day for 12 weeks or more (StatPearls, Bacopa) and found small gains in attention speed (Kongkeaw et al., 2014). By label order, NervoMax holds at most 200 mg per serving. The research is about memory, not nerves. Stomach upset is the most common side effect.

The basics
What is bacopa monnieri?
Bacopa monnieri is a small creeping herb used for centuries in Ayurvedic practice in India. Today it is sold mostly for memory and focus. In NervoMax it appears third, as "Bacopa Monnieri (20%)," inside the 600 mg blend.
| Label name | Bacopa Monnieri (20%) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Bacopa monnieri · Ayurvedic herb |
| Position on the label | 3 of 9 (labels list blend ingredients from most to least by weight) |
| Amount on the label | Undisclosed share of the 600 mg blend |
| What research has used | 300-450 mg a day for 12 weeks or more |
| Strength of evidence | Limited (memory speed) |
| What it is sold for | Studied for memory and attention |
| Main caution | Stomach upset, loose stools and nausea are the most common side effects. |
Reading the label
What does bacopa (20%) mean on the NervoMax label?
The 20% describes the extract, not its share of the blend. It means the bacopa extract is standardized so that 20 percent of its weight is a set marker compound. For bacopa, the usual markers are a group of compounds called bacosides. The NervoMax label does not name the marker.
| 20% means | The extract is standardized to a marker, likely bacosides |
|---|---|
| 20% does not mean | Bacopa is 20% of the 600 mg blend |
| Bacopa per serving | Not published |
| Upper limit by label order | 200 mg (third of nine, listed by weight) |
| Marker compound named | Not published |
Why 200 mg? Blend ingredients run from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36). Salt and cinnamon each weigh at least as much as bacopa. So bacopa can be no more than one-third of 600 mg. The real number is likely lower, since six more ingredients share the rest.
Dose check
How does the NervoMax bacopa dose compare with trials?
Adult trials gave 300 to 450 mg of extract a day (StatPearls, Bacopa). If the nine NervoMax ingredients were split evenly, bacopa would get about 67 mg. Even at its 200 mg ceiling, it would fall short of the low end.
At 1 capsule a day, the label's lower option, the bacopa amount halves again. The trials also ran for 12 weeks or longer (Kongkeaw et al., 2014).
Evidence
Does bacopa improve memory?
A little, in some tests. A 2014 review pooled 9 trials with 518 people, all lasting at least 12 weeks (Kongkeaw et al., 2014). Bacopa gave small gains in how fast people paid attention. The changes were modest, and they were measured with lab tests rather than daily life.
- Weeks 1-4
No trial in the review was this short, so there is no evidence for early effects.
- Weeks 5-11
Still under the length of every trial pooled in the review.
- Week 12 and on
Small gains in attention speed appeared at full trial doses (Kongkeaw et al., 2014).
Memory trouble has many causes, including low B12, medicines, alcohol, depression and stroke (MedlinePlus, Memory loss). A supplement does not rule any of them out. Federal health experts say not to delay seeing a provider about memory problems (NCCIH, 7 things).
Key point
Does bacopa help nerve tingling or numbness?
No trial we found tested bacopa for nerve function, numbness or tingling. Its research is about memory and attention in the brain. The NervoMax front label talks about nerve function, while the brand art talks about memory and "brain boosters." Bacopa fits the brand art, not the bottle front.
A herb studied for attention speed tells you nothing about tingling feet. Keep the two questions apart when you weigh NervoMax.
Safety
What are the side effects of bacopa?
The most common ones involve the gut. Trials report more frequent stools, nausea and stomach cramps (StatPearls, Bacopa).
Loose stools
More frequent bowel movements are the side effect seen most often.
Nausea
Some people feel queasy. Note when it happens and whether it eases over time.
Cramps
Stomach cramps show up in some trial reports. Stop and call your doctor if they persist.
Check other labels for bacopa before you add NervoMax. Doubling up raises the dose and the odds of stomach upset, and NervoMax does not print how much it adds.
Regulators
Has the FDA warned about bacopa products?
Yes, about how some were sold. FDA sent warning letters about more than 58 products marketed with unproven claims to treat or prevent Alzheimer's disease. The list included a bacopa product and a green tea extract product (FDA, Unproven Alzheimer's products).
The letters targeted disease claims, not bacopa as a plant. The NervoMax label makes structure and function claims with the standard FDA disclaimer. Regulators have also challenged unsupported memory claims for another supplement (FTC, Prevagen 2017). The FTC says health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence (FTC, Health claims). For NervoMax as a product, no study has been published.

Bottom line
Is bacopa worth having in NervoMax?
Bacopa has the most memory research of any herb in the blend, which is a fair point in its favor. The catch is dose and topic.
In its favor
- Standardized extract, stated as 20%
- Nine trials of memory and attention
- Side effects are mostly mild and digestive
Against it
- At most 200 mg, below the 300 mg trial floor
- Memory research, not nerve research
- Benefits small and slow, at 12+ weeks
- Marker compound not named

What comes before and after bacopa?
Before bacopa is cinnamon extract. After it comes lutein, an eye nutrient. The blend's other memory herb, ginkgo, sits seventh.
FAQ
Bacopa in NervoMax: FAQ
How much bacopa is in NervoMax?
NervoMax does not print its bacopa amount. Bacopa is third in the 600 mg blend, so it can be at most 200 mg per 2 capsules. Trials used 300 to 450 mg a day (StatPearls, Bacopa), so NervoMax likely gives less than studied doses.
What does bacopa 20% mean?
Bacopa 20% means the extract is standardized so one-fifth of its weight is a marker compound, usually bacosides. It does not mean bacopa makes up 20% of the blend. The NervoMax label does not name the marker compound.
How long does bacopa take to work?
Bacopa trials lasted at least 12 weeks before small gains in attention speed appeared (Kongkeaw et al., 2014). Shorter use was not tested in the pooled review. Expect no quick change, and remember NervoMax likely holds less bacopa than those trials used.
Does bacopa help with neuropathy?
No study shows bacopa helps neuropathy, numbness or tingling. Bacopa research covers memory and attention. If your hands or feet tingle, ask your doctor to check for causes such as diabetes, low B12 or too much vitamin B6.
What are bacopa side effects?
The most common bacopa side effects are more frequent stools, nausea and stomach cramps (StatPearls, Bacopa). They are usually mild. Stop taking it and call your doctor if they last, and check other supplements so you do not double the dose.
Did the FDA warn about bacopa?
FDA warned companies selling more than 58 products with unproven Alzheimer's claims, including one bacopa product (FDA, Unproven Alzheimer's products). The letters targeted disease claims, not the plant itself. No study of NervoMax has been published.
Is bacopa good for memory in older adults?
Bacopa showed small gains in attention speed after 12 or more weeks in pooled trials (Kongkeaw et al., 2014). The effect is modest. Memory changes in older adults have many causes (MedlinePlus, Memory loss), so see a provider rather than relying on a supplement.
