Bacopa and Ginkgo: What Memory Research Shows, and What NervoMax Brand Art Claims

Quick answer

Bacopa trials found small gains in attention speed at 300-450 mg a day after 12 weeks or more. Ginkgo did not prevent dementia in 3,069 older adults over about 6 years. NervoMax brand art claims memory and intelligence, but its label prints no amount of either herb, and no study of the product exists.

Brand art: a hand touching a puzzle piece beside a NervoMax bottle with the words Improve mental functioning: memory, intelligence, energy
Brand art, not evidence: the panel claims memory, intelligence and energy. The bottle label itself makes nerve claims only.

The claim

What does NervoMax brand art claim about memory?

Brand art for NervoMax says "Improve mental functioning: memory, intelligence, energy". The bottle label is narrower. It says "help support healthy nerve function" and relief support for discomfort, tension and occasional numbness and tingling.

The two herbs most often sold for memory are bacopa and ginkgo. Both are in the 600 mg blend. Neither has a printed amount.

Bacopa

Does bacopa improve memory?

A little, in one narrow way. A review of 9 trials with 518 people found small gains in the speed of attention (Kongkeaw et al., 2014). Every trial lasted at least 12 weeks.

Adult studies used 300-450 mg of extract a day (StatPearls, Bacopa). In NervoMax, bacopa is third of nine ingredients in a 600 mg blend. Label order caps it at 200 mg, below the low end of that range.

  • What it showed: faster attention scores after three months.
  • What it did not show: better recall, higher intelligence or quick results.
  • Common side effects: more frequent stools, nausea and cramps (StatPearls, Bacopa).

Ginkgo

Does ginkgo biloba help memory?

The largest trial says no. The GEM study gave 3,069 adults aged 75 and older 120 mg of ginkgo twice a day or a placebo. After a median of 6.1 years, dementia rates did not differ (DeKosky et al., 2008).

A Cochrane review of 36 trials called the evidence of benefit inconsistent and unreliable (Cochrane, Ginkgo 2009). In NervoMax, ginkgo is seventh of nine, so it can weigh at most 86 mg. GEM used 240 mg a day.

Ginkgo and blood thinners

Ginkgo may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo). Ask your doctor first.

How strong is the evidence behind NervoMax ingredients?

Each bar shows how directly a line of research answers the question a buyer asks.

  1. B12 if low
    B12 deficiency causes numbness

Fixing a real deficiency helps. Most people are not deficient. (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12)

  2. B vitamins
    Cochrane review: 13 trials

Evidence is insufficient to say B vitamins help nerve pain or tingling. (Cochrane, B vitamins)

  3. Bacopa
    9 memory trials

Small gains in attention speed after 12 weeks. Memory, not nerves. (Kongkeaw et al., 2014)

  4. Ginkgo
    Walking pain trials

No meaningful benefit for leg circulation pain. (Cochrane, Ginkgo 2013)

  5. NervoMax
    No study of the product

No trial of NervoMax for numbness, tingling or nerve health. (FTC, Health claims)

Bar length shows how directly each line of evidence answers the question: will this blend help my nerves? It is our editorial summary of the linked sources, not a score from any study.

NIH view

What do NIH experts say about memory supplements?

They have not found a supplement that protects memory. NIH's integrative health center reports that ginkgo did not lower dementia risk and that B vitamins showed no cognitive benefit (NCCIH, Cognition digest).

It also warns against delay. If memory worries you, see a provider rather than trying pills first (NCCIH, 7 things). A 62-year-old who keeps losing words, or a 70-year-old whose family notices changes, needs a checkup.

The rules

What do the FTC and FDA say about memory claims?

Both have acted against memory claims they found unsupported. In 2017, the FTC and New York charged the makers of Prevagen over "clinically shown" memory claims; the study did not beat placebo (FTC, Prevagen 2017).

FDA has sent warning letters on more than 58 unproven brain products, including a bacopa product and a green tea extract product (FDA, Unproven Alzheimer's products). That does not mean NervoMax broke a rule. It means memory claims deserve proof, and none is published for NervoMax.

Next steps

What should you do if your memory is slipping?

Find the cause before you buy anything. Memory loss has many causes, including low vitamin B12, medicines, alcohol, depression and stroke (MedlinePlus, Memory loss). Several of them can be treated.

  1. Write down what changed

Note examples, dates and who noticed. Bring the notes to your visit.

  2. List every pill you take

Include supplements. Bring the NervoMax bottle, since its ingredient amounts are not printed.

  3. Ask about blood tests

A B12 level is simple to check. Metformin and acid reducers can lower B12 (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12).

If you still want to try a herb, compare the hidden amounts in the blend with the study doses first.

FAQ

Bacopa, ginkgo and memory: common questions

Does NervoMax improve memory?

No study shows it. Brand art claims memory, intelligence and energy, but no trial of NervoMax exists. Its bacopa and ginkgo amounts are not printed, and label order caps both below the doses used in research. The bottle label itself makes nerve claims, not memory claims.

How long does bacopa take to work for memory?

Trials lasted at least 12 weeks before showing small gains in attention speed. They used 300-450 mg of extract a day. Nothing in that research suggests faster results. NervoMax does not print its bacopa amount, and label order caps it at 200 mg, below the trial range.

Does ginkgo biloba prevent dementia?

No. The GEM trial followed 3,069 adults aged 75 and older for a median of 6.1 years. Ginkgo at 120 mg twice a day did not lower dementia rates compared with a placebo. A Cochrane review of 36 trials also found the evidence of benefit unreliable.

What are the side effects of bacopa?

The most common are more frequent stools, nausea and stomach cramps, based on adult studies at 300-450 mg a day. NervoMax does not print its bacopa amount. Stop and ask your doctor if stomach problems last or get worse.

Can I take ginkgo with a blood thinner?

Ask your doctor first. Ginkgo may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners such as warfarin. NervoMax contains ginkgo in an unprinted amount, so bring the bottle and a list of every medicine and supplement you take to your appointment.

Are memory supplements regulated?

FDA does not approve supplements before sale. The FTC requires competent and reliable evidence for health claims and has challenged unsupported memory claims, including for Prevagen in 2017. FDA has also warned makers of unproven brain products, among them a bacopa product.
