Himalayan Pink Salt in Supplements: Why It Leads the NervoMax Blend

Quick answer

Himalayan pink salt is rock salt: mostly sodium chloride with tiny amounts of other minerals. You would need over 30 g a day to get meaningful minerals from it. In NervoMax it is listed first in the 600 mg blend, so it is the largest ingredient, which leaves less room for the other eight.

The basics

What is Himalayan pink salt?

It is a pink rock salt sold as a natural, mineral-rich salt. Chemically, it is mostly sodium chloride, the same compound as table salt, with small traces of other minerals (Fayet-Moore et al., 2020).

In NervoMax, Himalayan pink salt is the first of nine names in the 600 mg "Test Boost Proprietary Blend".

The mineral claim

Does pink salt have more minerals than table salt?

Slightly, but not enough to matter. Researchers tested pink salt sold in Australia. They found you would need over 30 g a day to get a meaningful amount of its minerals (Fayet-Moore et al., 2020). That much salt is far above any sodium limit.

The same study found one sample above the lead limit (Fayet-Moore et al., 2020). That says nothing about the salt in NervoMax, which has no published test. It does show that "natural" rock salt is not automatically clean.

A capsule holds milligrams, not grams. Even if the whole 600 mg blend were salt, the trace minerals would be tiny.

The sodium math

How much sodium could NervoMax add to your day?

Very little, compared with food. Pink salt is about 39% sodium by weight (Fayet-Moore et al., 2020), and the Daily Value for sodium is less than 2,300 mg (FDA, Sodium). Americans already average about 3,400 mg a day (FDA, Sodium).

If the salt weighsSodium, aboutShare of the 2,300 mg limit
67 mg (even split)27 mgabout 1%
200 mg80 mgabout 3.5%
600 mg (the whole blend)240 mgabout 10%

For most people, that is a small amount. If your doctor has you on a strict sodium limit for heart failure, kidney disease or blood pressure, ask for the real number anyway.

Reading the label

Why would salt be the first ingredient?

The label does not say. Ingredients in a blend are listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36), so salt is the heaviest. These are the common reasons a maker might lead with a mineral like salt. They are possibilities, not facts about NervoMax.

01

Filler

Salt is dense and flows well. It can help fill a capsule to a set weight.

02

Cheap weight

Salt costs far less than herbal extracts. Weight from salt makes the 600 mg total easy to reach.

03

Marketing

"Himalayan" sounds pure and mineral-rich. The name sells better than "sodium chloride".

Only the maker knows the reason. You can ask the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 for the salt amount and why it is there.

The trade-off

What does salt first mean for the other eight ingredients?

Every milligram of salt is a milligram the others do not get. Salt must weigh at least as much as any other ingredient. So the other eight share at most 533 mg, and probably less.

Vitamin B6 benchmarks come from the NIH fact sheet (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) and Australia's TGA (TGA, B6 alert 2022). NervoMax does not print its B6 amount, so you cannot place it on the first chart. The second chart shows that three of the nine ingredients alone, at study doses, would need most of the whole blend.

The second chart shows the squeeze. Bacopa at its study dose of 300 mg (StatPearls, Bacopa) would need half the blend by itself. But bacopa is third, behind salt and cinnamon, so it can be at most 200 mg. Ginkgo, seventh, can be at most 86 mg against 240 mg in the GEM trial (DeKosky et al., 2008).

What to do

Should you worry about the salt in NervoMax?

Not for the sodium itself, in most cases. The bigger issue is what the salt crowds out, and what the label leaves blank.

  • On a low-sodium diet: ask for the salt amount per capsule.
  • Comparing products: check what sits first in any blend.
  • Taking other B vitamins: ask for the vitamin B6 amount, which is also not printed.
  • Bring the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist.

A 62-year-old with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure is a good example. The salt is likely minor for him. The unknown B6 amount, sitting next to his numb feet, is not.

FAQ

Pink salt in supplements: common questions

Why is Himalayan pink salt in NervoMax?

The label does not say. Pink salt is listed first in the 600 mg blend, so it is the largest ingredient. Common reasons for leading with salt are filler, cheap weight and marketing, but the maker has not published its reason or the amount.

Is Himalayan pink salt healthier than regular salt?

Not in any way that matters. It is mostly sodium chloride, like table salt. A study of pink salt found you would need over 30 g a day to get meaningful minerals, which is far above safe sodium limits.

How much sodium is in NervoMax?

The label does not print a sodium amount. Pink salt is about 39% sodium, so 2 capsules could hold roughly 27 mg if the blend were split evenly, and no more than about 236 mg even if the whole blend were salt.

Does pink salt help nerves or tingling?

No research shows that it does. Pink salt has no known nerve benefit. Numbness and tingling need a cause found, such as diabetes, low B12, too much vitamin B6 or a medicine, so see a doctor rather than relying on a supplement.

Can I take NervoMax on a low-sodium diet?

Probably, but ask first. The sodium from 2 capsules is likely small next to food, yet the real salt amount is not printed. If you have a strict sodium limit, ask the seller for the number and check it with your doctor.

Why is salt the first ingredient in some supplements?

Blend ingredients are listed from most to least by weight, so the first one is the heaviest. Salt is cheap, dense and easy to fill into capsules. When it leads a blend, less room is left for the ingredients you are paying for.
