Vitamin B6
Can Vitamin B6 Cause Nerve Damage? What the Limits and Reports Show
Yes. Too much vitamin B6 can cause numbness, tingling and burning in the hands and feet. Adults need only 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day. The U.S. limit is 100 mg, but Australia has seen cases below 50 mg a day. NervoMax does not print its B6 amount.

The short answer
Can vitamin B6 cause nerve damage?
Yes. Vitamin B6 is needed for healthy nerves, but too much of it harms them. The damage is called sensory peripheral neuropathy (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).
It mostly hits the nerves that carry feeling, in the feet and hands first.
Old reports involved doses of several hundred milligrams a day. Newer reports from Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands describe cases at moderate doses taken for months (TGA, B6 alert 2022) (Medsafe, B6 2025) (van Hunsel et al., 2018).
The twist: too much B6 causes the same symptoms many people buy B vitamins to ease.
Numbers
How much vitamin B6 do you need, and how much is too much?
Adults need 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day, and food usually covers it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).
The upper limits are far higher than the need, but they do not agree with each other. The U.S. set 100 mg a day. Europe set 12 mg a day in 2023. Australia now requires a warning on products above 10 mg a day (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) (TGA, B6 alert 2022).
NervoMax prints no B6 amount, so it has no bar below.
Vitamin B6 benchmarks come from the NIH fact sheet (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) and Australia's TGA (TGA, B6 alert 2022). NervoMax does not print its B6 amount, so you cannot place it on the first chart. The second chart shows that three of the nine ingredients alone, at study doses, would need most of the whole blend.
Regulators
What did Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands find?
All three found damage at doses many people call normal.
Australia (TGA)
In 2022 the TGA warned that neuropathy can occur below 50 mg a day (TGA, B6 alert 2022). By October 31, 2025 it had counted 250 reports. Products above 50 mg a day move behind the pharmacy counter from June 1, 2027 (TGA, B6 update 2025).
New Zealand (Medsafe)
Five of six local reports involved a dietary supplement. Cases occurred at lower doses taken for a long time. Medsafe told prescribers to ask about B-complex and magnesium products (Medsafe, B6 2025).
The Netherlands
A review of 90 Dutch reports found products holding 1.4 to 100 mg of B6 per tablet. The authors could not rule out harm below 50 mg a day (van Hunsel et al., 2018).
An Australian lab also found high B6 in about 39% of 88,655 blood samples (Daley et al., 2023).
Signs
What does B6 nerve damage feel like?
It usually starts in the feet and hands. A review of 20 studies found the damage is mostly sensory (Muhamad et al., 2023).
- Numbness or pins and needles in the toes, feet or fingers
- Burning or "electric" feelings, often worse at night
- Trouble feeling the floor, or unsteady walking in low light
It usually improves after the extra B6 stops, though recovery can take months (Muhamad et al., 2023). No safe threshold is established, so your total matters most.
These signs also fit diabetes and low B12. Read when numbness needs a doctor for the warning signs.
Worksheet
How do you add up vitamin B6 across your supplements?
Add the B6 line from every bottle, in milligrams per day.
Line up every bottle
Multivitamins, B-complexes, magnesium, stress formulas and nerve products.
Find the B6 line
Pyridoxine, pyridoxine HCl and P5P all count.
Multiply by servings
Two tablets of 25 mg make 50 mg.
Mark any blank
No amount listed? Write "unknown" until the maker answers.
| Product | B6 per day | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| B-complex, 1 tablet | 50 mg (example) | Read it from your own label |
| Magnesium, 1 tablet | Up to 60 mg | Some magnesium tablets hold this much (Daley et al., 2023) |
| NervoMax, 2 capsules | Not published | Ask the maker |
| Total | Unknown | Already above 100 mg before NervoMax |
In that example, the first two products alone pass the U.S. upper limit.
On the label
Why does NervoMax's unprinted B6 amount matter?
Because you cannot add up what you cannot see. NervoMax lists "Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine)" sixth in its 600 mg blend, with no amount.

A product sold for "occasional numbness and tingling sensations" contains a vitamin that, in excess, causes both. Sixth place in a 600 mg blend could still be a small amount. The label does not say.

Next steps
What should you do if you take B6 and your tingling gets worse?
Call your doctor and bring every bottle.
Pause the supplements
Ask whether to stop B6 products you were not prescribed.
Ask for a blood test
B6, B12 and blood sugar cover three common causes.
Write down the pattern
Where it tingles, when, and how strong, 0 to 10.
Sudden numbness on one side, weakness, confusion or trouble speaking needs 911, not a supplement change.

FAQ
Vitamin B6 and nerve damage: common questions
Can vitamin B6 cause numbness?
Yes. Too much vitamin B6 can cause sensory peripheral neuropathy: numbness, tingling or burning in the feet and hands. It is most often linked to supplements, not food, and usually improves after the extra B6 stops. (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) (Muhamad et al., 2023)
How much vitamin B6 is too much per day?
The U.S. upper limit is 100 mg a day and Europe's is 12 mg. Australia has seen nerve damage below 50 mg a day and requires a warning above 10 mg. Adults need only 1.3 to 1.7 mg. (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) (TGA, B6 alert 2022)
Is nerve damage from vitamin B6 permanent?
Usually not. A review of 20 studies found B6 neuropathy most often improves after the extra B6 stops. Recovery can take many months, so tell your doctor as soon as symptoms appear. (Muhamad et al., 2023)
How much vitamin B6 is in NervoMax?
The label does not say. Vitamin B6 sits inside a 600 mg blend of nine ingredients with no individual amounts. Call the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 to ask, then share the answer with your doctor.
Does magnesium have vitamin B6 in it?
Some magnesium products do. An Australian report found magnesium tablets with 60 mg of B6 each, and Medsafe told prescribers to ask about them. Check your magnesium label for pyridoxine or P5P. (Daley et al., 2023) (Medsafe, B6 2025)
Can a B-complex give you too much B6?
It can, especially alongside other products. Dutch reports involved products with 1.4 to 100 mg of B6 per tablet. Read the B6 line on your B-complex and add it to every other source you take. (van Hunsel et al., 2018)
